Night Haunts

Sebastian Godwin

In 2008, for the first time in history, more than half of the world’s 6.7 billion people will live in cities. These films capture the unseen and un-applauded people who live and work in the night-time of the increasingly sprawling metropolis. Commissioned by Channel 4 as part of their '3 Minute Wonders' strand.

Film 1. Midnight Pilgrims - Tyburn Convent

The Nuns of Tyburn are based in the heart of London within a stone's throw of Marble Arch. Overnight, in silence, the nuns take it in turns to pray in solitude for the souls of Londoners.

Film 2. Night Cleaners

Ursula Lacbao is a night cleaner at St Pancras Station. Working from 6pm to 6am, Ursula makes her way through the station. She shares her hopes, her dreams and her life.

Film 3. Thames Barger

For over 50 years, Alan Jenner has been ferrying sand and gravel up the Thames through the night. Alone in a wide expanse of water, Alan is no stranger to the weird and wonderful sights of the night.

Film 4. Sleep Clinic

Gillian Twigg works the night shift at the Charing Cross Hospital Sleep Centre; all alone she supervises patients as they drift into dreams.

"The Night Haunts mini-documentaries are minor revelations that make brilliant use of their short running time, shouldn't an idea this compelling merit its own series?" The Guardian
